Ubuntu Linux and LTSP

Logical Networking Solutions is a strong advocate of open source software (OSS) and its successful integration into society. We feel that introducing the concepts of open source software is key to its acceptance throughout the world. LNS is dedicated to spreading open source software through as many channels as possible.

One particular area that LNS specializes in, in regards to OSS, is in the educational and youth sectors. We have found that young people are very much accepting of technology that strays from the norm - the norm being mostly proprietary software that costs as much as the hardware it runs on. Young people are more apt to learn a new technology, and are extremely motivated to find out how things work on the inside. LNS sees this as a perfect fit for open source software. We work with local school districts and after-school youth clubs to provide them with open source based solutions, and to say these projects have been a success would be a massive understatement. Software license philosophy aside, open source has also given many school districts and after-school NPOs a chance to harness a free alternative to costly software licensing and administration. Open source projects such as the Ubuntu Linux Operating System and the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) gives schools and after-school youth programs an entire computer lab solution that is light-years ahead of other mainstream solutions when it comes to centralized administration and "green" style low-cost, low-energy computing.

The Internet has shown us that rock-solid, stable and completely functional software can be written and shared with a community of software developers, system administrators and users alike, to come to fruition in and among itself with the help from the community that supports it. Far from one-off software projects and free-time-only software programmers, open source software has taken the lead in robust code - For one example see the apache project. Apache is the leading web server technology on the Internet today, and a poster child for the success of open source projects.

See the LNS Technical Wiki for a glimpse of how we are involved in the open source community, especially in regards to Ubuntu Linux and LTSP. We are strong supporters of open source software, and proud to call ourselves a small part of the larger open source community.
