Adobe releases new native 64-bit Linux Flash plugin

Posted by Jordan Erickson

It appears Adobe has made an about face regarding their support for 64-bit Linux and released a new “preview” Flash plugin. I have personally verified the plugin works in my 64-bit Debian Lenny LTSP server by simply removing the ‘nspluginwrapper’ package (which tried to make 32-bit Flash work, but with no sound unfortunately), closing out Iceweasel, and copying the new libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins. Sound “just worked” on my i386 LTSP terminal (which runs Iceweasel on the server and not as a localapp). I was also pleasantly surprised at the CPU usage of the new preview plugin – only 20-25% usage while watching a non-fullscreen youtube video (which is much better than previous versions).

You can download and keep up with the new 64-bit “Square” Adobe Flash plugin here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
