Hard Drives: Segate buys Maxtor for 1.9B

Posted by Jordan Erickson

Wow. Two of the biggest players in the hard drive industry are getting together! Segate is already the largest hard drive manufacturer in the world, and Maxtor is the third. I hope this spells good for the industry! I’ve been very fond of the Maxtor brand, and Seagate has also done very well for my customers and me.

There have been huge advances in hard drive technology lately, one being SATA (or Serial ATA). SATA is a technology that acts as the link between your hard drive and your computer. SATA is much faster than IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics… man, I *am* a geek!!) and comes standard on most new computers.

What does all of this mean for most people? Probably nothing hugely significant, but Seagate purchasing Maxtor means one less player in the hard drive industry. Let’s hope that the loss in competition doesn’t cause things to slow down at all! I’m still waiting for my 1TB (Terrabyte, or 1,000 Gigabytes) drive! 😉

Hard Drives: Just in case you’re not aware, the hard drive is where all of your data is stored on your computer. The programs you install, your documents, pictures and music are all stored on your hard drive.
