New Year Technologies

Posted by Jordan Erickson

I’ve been thinking a lot the past couple of days about the things we might see in the next year with technology. I’m excited to see a lot of innovation and integration, as this is the way it seems to be going.

In the beginning of the .COM boom, we saw a lot of new technologies and ideas with technology that “wow”ed us. A few years later, obviously, we see that a lot of these things have died out, due to the fact that most people realised we didn’t need a lot of it in our daily lives, and it was just hype.

In the past couple of years, however, we’ve seen a lot of technologies become smart. We’ve seen a lot of things come afoot that actually integrate quite well into our lives to not only make things easier for us, but to create new and interesting paths for these things to take.

One thing, maybe the most influential of them all, is Firefox. Firefox is a web browser, like Internet Explorer. Apart from the numerous security enhancements, simple design and ease of use, Firefox incorperated something that even Microsoft looked at to incorporate into IE 7 – tabbed browsing. If you haven’t seen or used tabbed browsing before, go download Firefox at . I simply can’t live without tabs in my web browser anymore. It works like this: You open up your browser, ok, nothing big there. Go to a website. Ok, great. That’s what a web browser does. Now, go to File -> New Tab. This will open up a second window IN the current web browser window, where you can go to another website, and switch between the two. While typing this blog, I currently have 7 tabs open. For some people, this might not be necessary – but trust me, once you use tabbed browsing, you won’t ever want to go back!

Hopefully the new year will continue to bring us great technologies that will integrate seamlessly into our daily lives, such as Firefox and tabbed web browsing. What I believe is important is that new technologies don’t just show us something new and flashy, but actually make our lives easier and don’t get in the way in the slightest bit. The minute technology gets in our way to prove it’s worth, is when it proves that it’s garbage.
